At PurpleMinds Foundation, our mission is to make mental health support accessible and culturally relevant for everyone. But we know that we cannot bring solutions to a community until we first understand that community.

This is why our recent visit to Bukamba was so significant. We weren't there to give lectures or hand out pamphlets. We were there to listen, to learn, and to introduce ourselves.

A Foundation Built on Respect
Our first point of contact was the respected Sheik of Bukamba. In many communities, religious leaders are the gatekeepers of trust and wellbeing. It was essential for us to sit with him, explain who we are at PurpleMinds, and express our genuine desire to understand the needs of the Muslim community he serves.

The meeting was less of an interview and more of an introductory dialogue. We explained that PurpleMinds exists to walk alongside communities, not above them.

Why We Conducted a Survey
The core of our visit was a simple, respectful survey. We asked questions designed to help us understand:

  • How is mental health generally perceived in Bukamba?

  • What are the biggest challenges people face regarding stress, anxiety, or family issues?

  • How do community members currently seek help or support?

  • What would a helpful mental health resource look like to them?

These questions are the seeds of our future programs. We cannot design a workshop or support group without first knowing the answers to these fundamental questions.

The Voice of the Community
The Sheik's willingness to engage with our survey was a monumental step. It signaled to us—and to the community—that mental wellness is a topic worthy of discussion. By allowing us to introduce our work through him, we hope to build a bridge of trust that allows every individual in Bukamba to feel safe seeking support if they need it.

What Comes Next?
The data and stories gathered from this visit will now guide our next steps. We are analyzing the feedback to ensure that any programs we develop in Bukamba are tailored specifically to the community's expressed needs.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Sheik Ali and everyone in Bukamba who welcomed us. This is just the beginning of our journey together.
