On the 10th of September 2026, something special happened in Bukamba, Kayunga. Fifty young people aged 13 to 18 gathered for the first day of our 2-Day Youth Holiday Workshop – "Healing Minds, Growing Hope."

It was a day filled with learning, laughter, connection, and hope. And it was just the beginning.

A Warm Welcome

The day began with registration, as our team welcomed 50 youth from across Bukamba and the surrounding villages. Each participant received materials, a warm greeting, and the sense of belonging that would define the entire workshop.

The youth were excited, curious, and ready to learn. The energy was electric.

Financial Literacy with Mr. Gava Farid

Our first session was led by Mr. Gava Farid, CEO of AMGA Cleaning Solutions. Mr. Farid delivered an engaging session on financial literacy – a topic rarely discussed with young people but essential for their future.

He covered the basics of saving, budgeting, and understanding the value of money. He emphasised that financial freedom begins with small, consistent habits – even at a young age.

The youth asked thoughtful questions, and many left determined to start saving and planning for their futures.

Self-Esteem with Founder Hassan Ssengendo

Next came a powerful session from our Founder, Mr. Hassan Ssengendo (Dexta) , on self-esteem.

He tackled a common challenge facing young people today: the trap of comparison. He explained that comparing ourselves to others – especially on social media – can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and low self-worth.

He reminded the youth of several key truths:

  • Your worth is not up for debate.

  • You are enough, exactly as you are.

  • Comparison steals your joy and your potential.

He also shared practical tools for building self-esteem, including the power of daily affirmations. The youth practiced affirming themselves and each other – a simple but transformative exercise.

One participant shared: "I learned that I don't need to be like anyone else. I just need to be the best version of me."

Sexual Reproductive Health with Nurses

After lunch, the youth were joined by two experienced nurses – Nakuya Annet and Nakhamia Catherine – who led a sensitive and informative session on sexual reproductive health.

To ensure age-appropriate conversations, the youth were divided into two groups: ages 13–15 and ages 16–18. This allowed the nurses to address the specific questions and concerns of each age group.

Topics covered included understanding their bodies, making informed choices, personal hygiene, and knowing where to seek help when needed.

The session was well-received, with many youth expressing gratitude for the open and honest discussion.

Free Haircuts: Community Love in Action

In a beautiful display of community care, Mr. Nyombi James, a young entrepreneur who owns a salon in Bukamba, provided free haircuts to the participants.

This initiative, fully sponsored by PurpleMinds Foundation, was more than just a grooming service. It was an act of dignity – a reminder that looking good and feeling good are connected.

Supporting a local youth business while serving the community – this is how we grow together.

Physical Games: Fun, Sweat, and Connection

The day ended with a vibrant physical session that had everyone on their feet!

The youth participated in:

  • Rope Pulling (Tug of War) – a test of teamwork and strength

  • Sack Racing – laughter and friendly competition

  • Jogging – movement, music, and getting the heart pumping

Physical activity is a powerful tool for mental health. It releases stress, boosts mood, and builds confidence. But more than that, it brought the youth together – creating bonds of friendship and solidarity that will last beyond the workshop.

The smiles, the laughter, and the cheering said it all.

Looking Ahead to Day Two

As Day One came to a close, the youth departed with new knowledge, new friends, and a sense of hope.

Day Two will focus on Climate Action and Leadership – including tree planting, waste management, leadership games, and a graduation celebration.

We cannot wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Gratitude

We extend our deepest gratitude to:

  • Mr. Gava Farid (CEO, AMGA Cleaning Solutions) – for the financial literacy session

  • Nakuya Annet and Nakhamia Catherine – for the health education session

  • Mr. Nyombi James – for the free haircuts
