The air at Lakeview High School was thick with anticipation – not because of an exam, but because of a debate. Two schools, one motion, and a generation determined to speak truth to power.
PurpleMinds Foundation, in partnership with Right Arm Uganda, organized an inter‑school debate between Lakeview High School (host) and Sure Prospect High School. The theme: Mental Health and Climate Change – two crises that are too often treated separately, but which young people know are deeply connected.
The Motion
Students were asked to argue the link between environmental degradation and psychological well‑being – the very essence of our Climate‑Mind Nexus. They tackled:
How drought, floods, and pollution fuel eco‑anxiety and depression
Why mental health support must be part of climate adaptation plans
The role of youth in advocating for integrated policies
Practical solutions like green skills, tree planting, and peer support circles
The Energy
The debaters spoke with passion and evidence. They quoted local examples – a farmer whose failed harvest led to family stress, a girl who missed school because floods destroyed the road. They also offered hope: the tree planted at the school, the peer counselor network they plan to start, the letters they will write to local leaders.
The audience – students, teachers, and community members – listened, cheered, and asked tough follow‑up questions. It was democracy in action, led by the youngest voices in the room.
The Winner
After rigorous judging, Sure Prospect High School took the trophy. But the real victory was the dialogue itself. Both schools left with:
Deeper understanding of the Climate‑Mind Nexus
A commitment to start or strengthen mental health clubs
Ideas for environmental projects on their campuses
Voices from the Day
“I never realized how much my worry about the environment affects my sleep. Today I learned that feeling is normal – and I can channel it into action.” – Debater, Lakeview High
“We need to talk about mental health in schools. It’s as important as math or science.” – Debater, Sure Prospect High
“The debate showed me that my voice matters. I can speak for my community and for the planet.” – Student audience member
Gratitude
We extend our deepest thanks to:
Lakeview High School for hosting and participating
Sure Prospect High School for traveling and debating with excellence
Right Arm Uganda for co‑organizing with energy and commitment
The teachers and judges for their time and wisdom
Every student who filled the hall with hope
Looking Ahead
This debate is part of PurpleMinds Foundation’s broader school outreach strategy. We plan to:
Establish debate clubs focused on climate and mental health
Train peer counselors in schools
Plant a “Climate‑Mind Garden” at participating schools
Facilitate more inter‑school exchanges
